Federer lands first 2008 title

Roger Federer beat Nikolay Davydenko when he retired hurt in the second set to win his first title for the year.

This was also Federer's first time to reach a final after the previous four attempts and I think that’s a good boost for him going into the clay court season leading on to the French Open next month.

I wonder whether the world number one would have won this tournament had Davydenko not retired because the first set was so tight it ended up in a tie-break.

In the second set the second seed had just broken Federer’s serve but I think it was also too early in that set to come up with a conclusion.

The real test for the world number will be when he plays in Monte Carlo when he is bound to meet quality players even in early rounds.

Thanks for the comment David. Yes, Ramirez had a good chance to beat Federer but he survived two match points. I am keen to see how far he will go at Monte Carlo.
