Federer wins 50th title

Roger Federer avenged last week's defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Montreal Masters when he beat James Blake to win the Cincinnati Masters tournament and claim his 50th ATP singles career title.

That was also Federer's 14th Masters Series title and at 26 and at the rate at which he is getting the titles, the number is set to continue to grow.

Federer had a relatively easy final this time around as Blake's game fell apart in the first set. Federer actually dropped just one game in the first set before winning the second set 6-4.

The tougher match for Federer was actually in the semi-finals against Lleyton Hewitt when he needed a third set tie-break to win the tie. Having beaten Hewitt easily a week before in Montreal, Hewitt played some good tennis in Cincinnati to nearly steal a march to the final.

With Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic not going beyond the second round, Federer knew that he had a very good chance of winning his 50th singles title and he did just that.

By going to two consecutive finals Federer has given himself extra practise matches before the 2007 US Open which starts next week at Flushing Meadows.
